I worked on the Merida dress! The skirt panels are now all assembled, including the pockets that I almost forgot to add. The pattern gives a really weird waist shape - it's meant to go in at the natural waist, but then go up and stop at a high waist where it meets the bodice portion. Except it's a super drastic shape from the waist to the top - almost as if it's widening enough for the bust (except it's waaaay lower than where the bust would be). I think I may have taken in about 3.5" in the top of the front seams. I also had to take the waist itself in, in both the front seams and the back seams - probably nearly 2" worth, even though I cut the pattern one size down from where my measurements should hit. There is just a ton of ease in this pattern, I guess. So fitting the bodice portion may wind up being a pain.

I probably won't have time to work on it tonight or tomorrow, but I should hopefully have a little time this weekend. I also want to get the Anna skirt cut out and assembled, though, because if I set my big machine up for embroidery, I can work on the embroidery at the same time as sewing Merida on the little machine.
theladyrebecca: (Default)
I was able to get a little bit of actual sewing done this weekend! On Saturday, I had some sewing time, and realized that I may as well assemble the s-bend corset whose mockup pieces I had cut out ages ago. So I sewed all the panels together! I still have to put in lacing strips and some boning so that I can actually try it on, though. I think it may actually be a little big, but we'll see. For my mockup, I literally just cut the pieces out of random canvas scraps I had laying around, but I really like the striped effect, so I think I might make the final corset striped, too.

Here's a pic:

The main reason I worked on that on Saturday was because I couldn't start any of the Dapper stuff till after Sunday. I knew Joanns was having 60% off coupons and pattern sales on Sunday/Monday (though it turned out to be the wrong pattern company than what I needed), so I didn't want to buy my Merida fabric till then. So Sunday I bought my Merida fabrics and tossed them in the wash, and after cutting out the skirt pieces in flannel, I realized they needed way more body. So on Monday, I went back to Joanns, and bought poly taffeta to flatline the skirt with (which hopefully won't wind up being too heavy), and most of the fabrics I need for Anna Frozen Fever, which I've decided will be my Halloween costume/Sat of Dapper Day disneybound.

Or at least, I hope I bought most of them. I wanted 4 yards of turquoise matte satin to comfortably cut out the Anna circle skirt, but the closest they had was 3 yards of aqua matte satin. I'm hoping I can eek it out of that, because I'd really like to get started on all that embroidery. (Come to think of it, I should probably check to make sure I still have stabilizer!) Unfortunately, Joanns has literally no light or bright green casa fabrics, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the vest. They also had none of the fabrics that I need for the regular Anna-inspired bustle dress I'm making for the Disney bustle group for CoCo next year.

Anyway, I cut out and flat-lined 5 of the 6 Merida skirt panels, and sewed the front three together. I'm hoping I might have time to cut out the pockets and the last panel today and sew them up, but with having to match plaids, it's going much slower than a normal skirt!
theladyrebecca: (Default)
I finally have picked my Disneybound for Sunday of Dapper Day weekend. I'm going to do Merida! It actually makes perfect sense, because I wanted to do a princess, plus someone that would make sense with my red hair, and some of our other friends that we're meeting up with are doing Pixar. Perfect! At this point, I think what I'm going to do is a 50s-style high-ish waisted full-skirted dress, with the skirt out of a dark green plaid, and the bodice portion out of a solid dark green. I'm going to curl my hair really nicely, and possibly do a small fascinator-type hat on a tam base. I think I'll go with some sort of sensible brown shoe, a bag with either a bear face or an embroidered celtic bear, a wide brown belt, and possibly a parasol.

So that leaves Friday and Saturday. I know I'm going to make a cotton print dress. I found a Villains print, but I also really like the print with the vintage Disney movie posters... And I'm not sure yet what style I want the print dress to be. I find that the allover villains print I already have is hard to wear on a regular basis because the print is just a lot. Whereas my Beauty and the Beast jumper dress is easier to wear. So I'm thinking maybe a high-waisted suspender skirt? Or maybe use it as a wide border and accent print on an otherwise solid dress?

For Saturday, I'm debating about wearing the 1890s ice cream parlour blouse with a dark and solid calf-length skirt and Victorian boots. The thing is, if it's warm, that high collar is probably going to bug the heck out of me... So my other thought is to do a princess Anna disneybound. And if I do Anna, I might do it double duty - for Dapper Day, do the full embroidered skirt (either regular or Frozen Fever), but pair it with a more representative top, and then use the skirt with the repro bodice/blouse/etc for Halloween. Because otherwise I'm not sure I can make all of this plus a Halloween costume by then!

On Saturday, a group of my friends and I attended the Geeks Who Drink "When You Wish Upon a Bar" Disney quiz in Tacoma. Three of us dressed up, and I pulled out Jane to wear. I haven't worn this costume in years (I think the last time was for Emerald City ComiCon in March 2014), and the funny thing about returning to old costumes is that all of a sudden all the problems seem to be much more obvious. Like how stupidly large and ill-fitting that collar is, and the fact that once that hugely wide but very short bustle collapses, it doesn't want to un-collapse. Nevertheless, I still won the costume contest! And better yet, we won 1st place in the quiz, too!

That said, this was the first time that we had attended the quiz in Tacoma instead of Seattle, and we're going to stick with Seattle in the future. There were hardly any teams in Tacoma, so the prize money was really low, and it turns out that our score was high enough that we would have won in Seattle as well. I wish these themed quizzes came up more than once every 1-1.5 or so years, because they're so much fun! And now we can say we are both the Harry Potter and Disney champions. :)

Anyway, here's a few pictures!

I put aside the gala gown last night, and decided to work on Cinderella for Disenchanted instead. After work yesterday, I dropped off all the materials for three of the costumes with one of my stitchers, then went to Ross and picked up a few of the ready-to-wear pieces I need for the show. That all took a big load off. When I got home, I started cutting out the patterns and fabric for Cindy. I got her bloomers all cut out (cotton and glitter organza), and her underskirt (satin and glitter organza), but then I had to go to bed. I doubt I'll have any time to sew today, since I'm going up to Seattle to see the Hunchback of Notre Dame tonight (so excited!), but I'm looking forward to working on her more tomorrow.

I think it should go together fairly quickly - I have an overskirt section, arm poufs, and the strapless bodice as well, and I won't be able to actually finish hems and binding until after the fitting next Monday, but I'd like to get the whole thing plus Ariel's tail done before then. And maybe work on my 1890s skirt and shirtwaist a little, too, though I doubt I'll get that far, since this weekend is very full.

I've been thinking a lot about my style recently, and [personal profile] elizabeth_mn's post has inspired me to write it all out.

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you'll know that I recently took part in the #disneyboundchallenge, which provided a different theme for every day of March, based on Disney characters or movies. If you're not familiar with Disneybounding, it involves dressing to represent something from Disney, like wearing a yellow skirt with a blue shirt and red sweater for Snow White, or a red polka-dot dress for Minnie Mouse. I've done it consciously for most of my trips to the Disney parks over the last few years, and occasionally I accidentally do it when dressing for work etc, but this is the first time I've taken part in the challenge. And it was really fun!

Here's a recap of what I did. See if you can guess the characters!

Participating in the challenge also made me really examine my wardrobe (it was important to me that I didn't buy anything for the challenge). I was using pieces that, in many cases, I haven't used in a while, which helped me remember what I had, but had forgotten about. And at the same time, I realized all the holes in my wardrobe that I need to fill. Of course, some of the holes I don't plan to fill. For example, I have no brown whatsoever in my wardrobe. I have a khaki skirt. That is the closest thing I own to anything brown, and that's it. I also have no lime or light green. However, neither of these are colors that I like, so I have no intention of filling them.

These were the biggest holes I needed to fill:
  • more red
  • black cardigan sweater
  • yellow skirt
  • nude pumps
  • new black pumps, since mine are falling apart
  • white leggings
  • more necklaces
  • possibly a grey cardigan
The cool thing is that since I noticed these gaps, I've already filled all of them except the white leggings, yellow skirt, grey cardigan, and more necklaces. I bought a red skirt on clearance at Torrid last week (pictured), and a black cardigan from the thrift store yesterday. I found nude pumps from DSW that arrived a week ago (also pictured), and which worked so perfectly that this week, I ordered the same pair in black. White leggings seem to be a seasonal thing, and I'm still not 100% sure I really want them or the grey sweater, since both could potentially be unflattering. But I'm on the lookout for them. I plan to make a golden yellow winter-weight circle skirt, and I've been on the lookout for various necklaces as well.

My style has undergone a pretty big change just in the last year or so. For a really long time, I pretty much never wore skirts and dresses. I was very much a jeans girl, often pairing them earlier on with t-shirts, and later with fairly structured button-up blouses. That transitioned about 4 years ago or so to stretchier skinny jeans with longer blouses, still often button-up, but made of lighter materials. Then about 2 years ago, I discovered how comfortable leggings are, and my style transitioned more towards leggings with shorter (usually patterned) skirts over them, and lighter, more neutral blouses.

But over the last 4-5 years, I've also been collecting eshakti dresses from thrift stores, and occasionally incorporating them into my wardrobe. And in the past few seasons, I've found that they now make up the majority of my wardrobe. Now, I wear fit-and-flare dresses, lightweight blouses tucked into skirts, or cropped sweaters with skirts, and I wear these over a very small tulle petticoat, and pair them with tights (usually black or nude, but sometimes navy or white), and shoes with a higher heel than I used to wear before (I find anything under about 1.25" very uncomfortable). I still occasionally do the leggings/short skirt options, since that's a little easier for exercising or in warmer weather, but the majority of my time is spent in longer skirts or dresses (most of which hit between the knee and mid-calf).

Color-wise, I tend to gravitate towards jewel-tones. I love royal blue, scarlet, and emerald green. I also enjoy deep teal, bright yellow, navy, light blue (though despite having a ton of light blue costumes, I actually don't have much light blue in my wardrobe). I also have a whole bunch of black. I have almost no grey. And though I do sometimes wear pastels, I feel like they don't tend to look as good on me because I have very ruddy skin.

I find my style to be very classy and lady-like, but also very girly. And I feel like, though most of what I wear is of modern fabrics, it has a vintage feel, or at least a vintage shape, with the fitted waist and fuller skirts. In the last couple months, I've also taken to wearing lipstick most of the time, because I found Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink, which is the best long-wear lipstick ever, in my opinion, and I feel like that just makes everything look more polished. I think the next step would be to do more with my hair. Usually I just straighten it and wear it down, or occasionally in a half-pony, but I just did a show where I set my hair in a 30s style, and I enjoyed the big waves and curls from that. Unfortunately, that takes an extra 30+ mins in the morning, and I'm not willing to wake up that much earlier.

It's been really fun analyzing my style, and dressing to a particular theme for a whole month really helped!

theladyrebecca: (Default)
Okay, I'm going to attempt to do a brief recap five months after Costume College. No idea if I'll remember enough to make these at all worthwhile, so sorry!

Friday during the day, I wore my Mary Poppins outfit I made for Halloween 2016.

I took the Circular handbags class taught by Catherine and Bunny (pictured below), and then I went to go teach my own class, which was on 1830s sleeve supports vs. 1890s sleeve structure. It seemed to go over well, and it was fun to be able to show an extant bodice with elaborate sleeves to the class. I'd love to do more things where I can show off the pieces in my collection, but it's just too hard to transport them all to CoCo.

I also went to the Historical Dancing class, where I learned that I really didn't make my Mary Poppins outfit sturdy enough. I'd only worn the bodice 2-3 times before, but during the dancing, both underarms shredded through the seams (and I think I tore one of the arms somewhere else, too). Any tips on repairing silk organza sleeves? I also broke at least one of the elastic arch straps on the spats. So yeah, not great for dancing, and now I have a whole bunch of repairs I need to make if I want to wear Mary Poppins again.

For the Social, I wore my Elizabeth Swann dress. I was supposed to be part of the Keira Knopely group, which started out as about 15-20 people and ended up with just me. Oh well. I think I still did a good job on the dress, though I didn't really get that many good pictures of it.

After the social, I attended the historical dance that was going on. I loved that they had that this year, and I wish I had worn an outfit a little more conducive to dancing. But my feet were really killing me not too far into the dance, so I didn't stay long. I made about a 3-min stop at the Pink Princess party, but it was just too crowded and too loud, so I hung out with some quieter friends for a little while instead. (Thanks Sabrina, Katherine, and Elizabeth!)

One of the things I appreciate about both of Friday's costumes is that they both contain a souvenir from when I worked at Disneyworld. Mary Poppin's gloves are actual Mary Poppins character gloves. When I worked in costuming, these came back to us with a couple rips in one of them. They were going to be thrown out, so I asked if I could have them, and they said yes! I fixed the rip, and with the lace, it's hard to tell the repair is even there. The pirate medallion I was given when I worked at the Pirates League. I was one of the first people hired there after the opening crew, and they still had some of the opening crew gifts, so I was given this and a Pirates League backpack.

Hopefully it won't be another 5 months till I recap Saturday and Sunday!

Thumper!

Whoops. I fell off the posty-wagon. But I did finish Thumper last week!

I also started cutting out a super-secret project over the weekend. Unfortunately, since it's a Christmas present, I won't be able to post about it till it's done. Tech has been so draining this week that it hasn't had any progress since being mostly cut out on Saturday.

But I'm off work on Thurs and Fri, and I have no rehearsal Thurs either, so I'm planning on using the whole day to relax, clean my house, and sew, both on the present, and on the mockup for my winter coat. Though seeing all the awesome pics from Gettysburg is also inspiring me to get back into working on costumes. So hopefully that will happen this month, too, or I will be woefully behind for CoCo.
theladyrebecca: (Default)
Thumper is coming along! I plan to sew on the ears and all the appliques today (they're just pinned on in the picture), and hopefully I'll have time to do the embroidery and add the tail and chest fluff tomorrow. This has been a nice fun project so far!

theladyrebecca: (Default)
I swear, every time I look at Dreamwidth, a week has passed. I really don't know how that's happening, though I also don't know how we're already halfway through November.

I finished the commission on Friday, and it has been picked up, so now I don't have to worry about that, which is certainly a nice feeling. It's maybe not so nice when I look at my finances and realize the money from the commission has been helping to keep me afloat, instead of going into a save-for-Europe/later bonus fund. Oh well....

Here's a pic. It wasn't my design - I was reproducing an old jacket from the 90s.

Anyway, now I get to sew for me! I wanted my first project to be fairly quick, no stress, and something small that I could take with me to sew at rehearsals. So I pulled out my new Simplicity Disney stuffed animals pattern, and I'm making Thumper. I think I've got the body a little more than half done at this point. I'm hoping I can do a tiny bit more today before rehearsal.

Here's what he looks like so far:

This is also my filler project before my coat lining gets here, because my next project is going to be a winter coat. I guess I should probably mock that up...

After I finish that, I'm not positive what will come next. I want an S-bend corset, so possibly that. But I'm so far behind in my sewing because of the commission that I really should be getting on with my gala dress or something, which doesn't need the corset (that's for an Edwardian I want to make). But I haven't finalized what I'm actually making for the gala yet - all I know is that it will be yellow and 1890s. Or I could go back to the stripey 1880s bustle I was working on, but that was being a pain before which was why I shelved it. Or I could do the plaid 1830s dress I want to make, which would probably be the easiest choice. Fitting just seems like such a pain right now. Maybe once we open and I have more time to think and do things I'll figure this all out.

Insanely early Tuesday morning, I flew in to Long Beach, picked up a rental car, and headed straight to Disneyland. I was joined partway through the day by a couple of other CoCo'ers, Maria and later, Teresa and her daughter, neither of whom I knew before, so it was fun to bond with new friends! I stayed surprisingly late (considering I had woken up around 2am), and caught Fantasmic, the fireworks, and the Electric Light Parade before driving to my aunt's house to stay the night.

I slept in a little the next day and had breakfast with my aunt before heading back to Disneyland. I wore my new Belle-inspired dress, which has since become one of my wardrobe favorites, and spent a good chunk of the afternoon and evening with one of my good friends/sorority sisters from college, which was wonderful. We got a great spot for the fireworks, and made it over to World of Color just in time for the show. One of the coolest things that I experienced, though, was getting to sit in the 3rd row center section of the Frozen musical. It was like a whole different show from that close, and it was just amazing getting to see all the details! Overall, it was a fantastic two days, and a great way to end my annual pass (Wed was the last day it was valid, because Disneyland's passes are good for 366 days)!

Here's two pictures. The rest of the pictures of Disneyland can be found here.

Thursday, after breakfast with my aunt, I headed north to LA - I quickly swung by Home Fabrics for literally 15 minutes, and picked up some solid butter yellow silk taffeta (they didn't have the goldenrod I was looking for for a historical Belle gala dress at the time), and a brick red-based plaid silk taffeta (for an 1830s dress). Then I headed to Bel Air to meet my Grandpa and a different aunt for lunch at her country club. By the time we finished, traffic had gotten bad, so I took the scenic route up the coast and through Topanga Canyon to get to CoCo. My roommate had already checked in, so I was able to drop off the rental car and head right upstairs. We had a little bit of downtime before getting ready for registration and the Pool Party, which I used to iron or steam pretty much everything I had brought with me.

For the Pool Party, I wore my Snow White outfit as part of the Designer Disney group. I definitely need to do something to that cape before the next time I wear it, since it was constantly trying to choke me, even with double stick tape and attempting to pin it into place. Everyone looked great at the pool party, though! I loved how many people were dressed to the Disney theme.

I will have more posts for the rest of the weekend at some point, but I can't promise that they will come right away!

Everything for CoCo is finished(ish). I tried on the finished Belle dress for the first time last night, and there's a weird baggy section in the center of the back. So I'm trying to decide if I want to redo the zipper in that one section to take it in. I think it will depend on how much free time I wind up having this evening. I opted to work late to get more hours, which means I'll likely only have less than an hour at home before my audition. And then I'll probably be home at about 8pm, and since I have to wake up between 2am-2:30 to get to the airport, I should go to bed right away. So basically, right now I'm leaning towards not fixing it.

I also made the stupid mistake of leaving an uncapped highlighter on my sewing table last night, and it spent the night touching one of the ties on the vintage apron I'm wearing for Belle. I tried bleaching it this morning, which lightened it, but did not make it go away. I'm going to try oxyclean when I get home.

And I still need to pack some of my regular outfit stuff, for Disney, Thurs, and next Monday. Then the very last stuff I won't be able to pack till tomorrow morning. But I did most of it over the weekend, including driving over an hour to Everett, so that my roommate could bring down the bigger and less packable things for me. So glad she drives down!
theladyrebecca: (Default)
I got home from rehearsal 45 mins early yesterday (which meant I got home at about 9:50pm), and made the possibly irresponsible decision to watch at least part of the movie due back at the library today while I cut out pieces for the Beauty and the Beast dress. I was going to just watch half the movie, and just cut the skirt, but then that turned into the whole movie and the whole dress and going to bed just after midnight. Whoops. But at least it's cut out!

My goal for this afternoon is to assemble the entire dress except the zipper (since I'm not going to Joanns till tomorrow). Hopefully I'll even do the hem. And I want to cut out all the organdy pieces for class. I'm thinking that if I cut all that out, I'll be better able to figure out how much muslin I need for all the class pieces, too. I don't think I have much (if any) muslin in the stash, so that will have to wait till after I hit Joanns as well. Then I can cut out the rest of the pieces on Saturday. And pack. And drop off all the stuff that's too big to pack to my roommate, who is driving down and luckily only lives a little over an hour away from me.
theladyrebecca: (Default)
Despite not having much sewing time today, I'm definitely feeling better now. Still stressed, but less so. The princess dress was finished and packaged up by the time I left for rehearsal. Then while I was at rehearsal, I managed to sew about 1/3 of the overskirt trim on. And when I came home, I stayed up too late, but I finished the pleating, and attached the pleats and one side of the fur to the skirt.

I think I'll have some time to sew at rehearsal tomorrow, as well, so I'm hoping I might even get the overskirt finished by the end of the night. And hopefully when I come home, I can stay up late enough to set the sleeves. That would make Wed evening's sewing manageable, since I don't have rehearsal that night. Though of course, I do have to pack, too!

I realized I haven't been posting any pictures of the skating dress so far, so here's one, which shows the bodice and skirt pleats/fur. Clearly this is going to be one I'm going to have to lint-roll constantly. Also a bonus princess dress picture, since it's a new style.

My 2016 Goals changed a few times over the course of the year, but this is what they were:

Navy blue swiss dot Regency - Done!
Black silk taffeta bustle ballgown - Done!
Child's Victorian Gown - Done!
Daniel Deronda Riding Habit - Still hasn't happened, and is no longer on my specific upcoming goals list.
1860s Fully Handsewn dress - Didn't even pick this up all year. Maybe someday, but probably not anytime soon.
Turquoise Silk Mid-19th c  Giant Ballgown - I kind of knew this was going to be a 2017 project, and sure enough, it will be.
Fur-trimmed bustle-era skating outfit - Coming up next; I've already started cutting pieces out.
Winter bustle gown - Almost done!
Super-secret Disney-related project - No longer super secret. This is the Snow White Designer Disney dress, and will be made for the CoCo pool party this year.

In June, I added an Elizabethan kirtle and Mary Poppins Jolly Holiday to the list, both of which I have since completed.

And here's picture proof of everything I made!

I think that's everything. Overall, not a bad sewing year, though being unemployed for the first eight months of the year certainly helped in that, and as you can tell by my posts, my sewing has definitely slowed down since I started working in September!
theladyrebecca: (Default)
Thank you all for your advice! I've decided to treat the two layers as one. But what does that mean for the CF and CB pieces? I think I have to make a facing for these pieces, but do I make the facing out of the strength layer? That is what makes the most sense to me, but I don't want to accidentally make those pieces more bulky in the process.

Anyway, I started serging the corset pieces - I got the gussets done, but that's it. However, I did find the right blue cotton at my other Joanns for Princess Anna, so I made the tiny Anna dress today. I also worked on a Disney map puzzle that my bf and I got at Disneyland. It's hard to focus on sewing when I want to work on the puzzle!

I realized tonight that it's been almost two weeks, and I still haven't done a real post about Dapper Day!

I flew down super early Saturday morning to Long Beach, picked up my rental car, and drove to Disney. By the time I parked, it was shortly before the Dapper Day Expo opened at the Disneyland Hotel, so I waited around a little bit, and then checked that out. There was sooo much vintage and repro clothing and accessories for sale, but it was all quite expensive (and I didn't want to have to walk around all day with it). It was kind of nice that Simplicity had a booth advertising their new patterns, and were giving out vintage apron patterns and travel sewing kits.

After I walked around the whole Expo, I headed to CA Adventure. I was on my own on Saturday, and seemed to have pretty bad timing on wait times for things, so Saturday wasn't the greatest day. That said, I did a bunch of pin trading, met several characters, did a few character drawing sessions, and did manage to ride several rides, too. I also watched the absolute worst Disney fireworks show ever. It was literally 4 minutes long.

Luckily, Sunday made up for Saturday. I met up with a friend of mine who I hadn't seen since college, which was wonderful. It was her first full day visiting Disneyland, and I absolutely love taking Disney newbies around the park. We met lots of characters, had perfect timing for pretty much every ride, and did a ton of people-watching. So many people were dressed up in Dapper style, and most people were also Disneybounding, so it was really fun to try to guess who everyone was supposed to be. Another friend joined us in the evening, and we rode more rides and all watched World of Color. It was such a great day!

Here are some pics. More of them can be found on my facebook.

I spent tonight trying to catch up on all the LJ posts for the last several days while trying not to scream/vomit/cry because of this stupid election. I refuse to accept that Trump appears to have won. I doubt I'm going to be able to sleep, but if I can, I want to wake up and have it all be a terrible nightmare.

But I digress. I did actually do some sewing at the end of last week. I fixed my Mary Poppins skirt appliques, put together the mockup for my corset, (which I still need to try on), and I also did my commission for Princess Anna's winter hat. Tada!

Obviously, the second picture is unfinished, but it was the only one I took that showed the painting I did on the back.

Anyway, then I ran off to Disneyland for the weekend for Dapper Day. I don't have most of my pictures yet, (my phone is so terrible that for Sunday we mostly used my friend's phone to take pictures), so here's a teaser pic from when I met Mary Poppins:
I got to meet Mary Poppins today! #dapperday #marypoppins #marypoppinsmonday #disneybound #disneyinspired #disneyland #dapperday2016

I'll do a full post on Disney as soon as I get the pics, but seeing everyone all dressed up for Dapper Day was amazing. It was a lot of fun just people watching, and trying to guess some of the disney bounds I saw.

But now I'm back, and I really need to try on the corset mockup and get on all the stuff for my caroling group, so that I can go back to working on the corset, and eventually, the green bustle gown! Eventually, I'll need to go back and fix Mary Poppins, too, since I had two bones work their way out of the swiss waist while I was wearing it, and more appliques need to be sewn on in more places, but that can wait till early summer. Because I have so much sewing to do right now...
theladyrebecca: (Default)
We had an awesome Halloween! I dressed as Mary Poppins during the day, but went scary in all black with a big dark cloak and painted face for the trick-or-treaters. Most people were at least fairly scared at our house, but it was nothing compared to all the screams coming from our next-door neighbors' house! At the last minute, when I got home from work, we added a bunch more decorations, and then I spent most of the evening at the door, so no sewing time.

I also realized while wearing Mary Poppins that a bunch of my skirt appliques are trying to come off, so I really need to sew them on before Disney this weekend. But I also haven't had any time to sew! I need to fix the skirt, make the Princess Anna hat, fix all the costumes for my caroling group, finish my corset, and hopefully make a new bustle gown. All by Thanksgiving. Yikes.

Anyway, what I did manage today was to practice my hair and decide on a hat to wear with my Disney Villains dress for Saturday, but I'm still waffling on the shoes. Help me decide! The majority vote from facebook seems to be for the Saddle shoes, so I'm going to try breaking them in starting tomorrow.

Mary Poppins had her debut yesterday for a Halloween party one of my friends was throwing. It worked out well! I definitely should have practiced my hair ahead of time, since it was a lot harder than I thought it would be, and I also made it a little too high on my head, so the hat kept wanting to either slide forward of backward, since I wasn't using a hat pin. And I did get super paranoid as I was leaving the party, because it had started raining, and the dyed Poppins umbrella is the last thing I want to get wet, so I covered the umbrella with my hat, and literally ran down her long driveway and up the street to my car. I don't think the rain did anything, though.

Here's a pic!

I'll try to get better pics when I wear it next, which will be for my party on Saturday. And for now, it's back to working on the corset mockup.
