Well, we are very much down to the wire here! I haven't left this many things this late for a costume event in a very long time... I still think I can get it done, since we're driving out to Robin tomorrow, and then staying at the Inn Friday night.

Still have to pack: all the costume shit (four outfits for two people, so much to potentially forget, ugh), plus candelabra, plus a few bits and pieces people bought from me, plus picnic gear.

Still have to sew:
Hem both pairs of trousers
Buttons and buttonholes on satin weskit
Ribbon on goofy day cap
Lace on chemisette collar

At least only the first two are 100% necessary....

Here's hoping...

I finished the giant bonnet and somehow neatly nestled it in my suitcase.

I might make a bustle pad tonight if I feel like it...

And in 5 hours I will be sitting on my train.

Did a toilé of The Prince's vest, it can be made with or without the collar (so he better be thankful that he gets velvet vests and TWO different types at that), but I think I fucked up something because the collar should be longer? Also: this one is a size 44 and it is HUGE. I copied the smallest (38) size for myself but I already dread making a toilé.

And although it is not on the UFO/WIP pile, but it is only rectangles, I made a tsuke obi from another old wool skirt.More and more of the floor is visible.

I finished my hairpieces this morning, so I'm actually pretty ready. I decided that I'd start the bonnet and work on it as long as I was enjoying it. So far the frame is almost done. It's about half my suitcase in size. Hmm.

Dee: His scent is soft English leather, rosewood and tonka with a hint of incense, parchment and soft woods.

As with The White Rider, the leather smells really disinfecty in the bottle and wet. When it dries - after roughly the time it took me to walk to work - it's much nicer, with the tonka", rosewood?, and incense? coming out. I don't love the doctor's-office stage, but the other is a nice non-food/spice, non-floral option.

New Regency Dress

I finished a new Regency dress recently. I was shooting for right around the year 1800. It's cut from a vintage sari that I got a few years ago. I think it's a silk cotton blend. The bodice is lined in linen. It's a combination of machine- and hand-sewing. I made things up more than I usually like to because I had a view of what I wanted it to look like and went searching for proof that I wasn't too far off base instead of finding something I wanted to more or less copy so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not as accurate as one would hope.

I don't know whether I will have the time to post in the evening so here is what I did until now today.
Dug out the gold mine...

The thing is... I must have lost a good amount of weight because the bootcovers are too big, even fully laced (need to buy thin gold cord as guess what I do not have in my stash...), so they kept sliding off during photographing. And yes, all the cool Chaos cultists wear minions tees with their pajama pants.

Not that much of a problem since I have several gold braid and black leather belt in my "throw it away or make something out of it" family donation bag, so I will just criss-cross them over the thigh. I also have not sewn the lower ends closed because I will have to see how they fit under the aquilas once I repaired the shoes and might need to add some elastic so they do not slide upwards.

The good news is, the red stockings arrived and they are RED. Like "I'm an expensive whore" red and they just BEG to be clocked... (hard to photograph, they are nearly the exact same colour as the big beads, so darker than they seem here)

What is important today is to copy the vest patterns and make toilés.

I made the sleeve supports tonight and should finish the pelerine. I also fixed the petticoat.

So just hair pieces left. Unless I try to make a bonnet in a day...

... doing X, else I will fall back into mopey territory.
Today, after a few coffees, a realization hit me: I currently do not have a job. And now suddenly that does not mean that I sit all day looking at ads and feeling like a worthless piece of shit, reminding myself that I should be studying, practicing my languages, crafting, exercising and a thousand other things. And then being overwhelmed, doing nothing, and feeling like aforementioned piece of shit for it, which just drives me deeper into depression.

I NEED deadlines in my life or I will never finish anything. Why I suddenly continued with all the cosplay stuff? Because I need to close down that part of my life. I tried it, enjoyed crafting but will never reach the level I would find acceptable, because I do not have the tools, the time or the motivation and the social media skills.
I tossed several costume ideas, I tossed props, gave away some...

But enough of my psyche. Of the goals I set for myself for Sunday-today-Tuesday, I did the following:

corsets and shrugs for myself
1, choose pattern for shrug
2, finish grey and black thin striped fabric corset
3, make grey and black thin striped fabric shrug
4, finish petrol satin corset
5, make grey-on-grey baroque fabric shrug
6, make grey-on-grey baroque fabric corset

Malfian Noble red chainsword named Dies Irae
1, add black basecoat
2, paint red and gold
3, drybrush
4, add jewels?
5, wrap handle in leather

What I plan on doing later today are the bootcovers and copying the vest patterns. Maybe add a second layer of paint on the sword.

Malfian Noble black velvet thigh high bootcovers
1, add decoration (golden tassels, pearls, jewels?, cording etc.) and sew closed
2, add eyelets
3, add golden cord lacing

vests for myself / velvet vests for The Prince I promised him for his birthday
1, copy patterns (I remember having copied them, can't find any)
2, make toilés (for The Prince first as I need him to try them on on Wednesday)

servoskull decorated in Hallstatt skulls style, made up like a tiny shrine
1, add more techno bits
2, paint
3, make support column

But I'll let the pics speak for themselves:

I used up several meters of fabric, various ribbon scraps for bias tape, pots of old paint, clasps I bought a thousand years ago, eyelets from that Natron&Soda group order from 10? years ago... I'm happy.

Mr. D is currently making dinner for which I am endlessly grateful. Come to think of it, he made dinner yesterday too, prosciutto wrapped green asparagus baked in the oven at 400F for 15-20 min with a bit of grated Parmesan cheese on top, with a few drops of fancy balsamic vinegar, and toasted hazelnuts.

Snake Oil: Magnetic, mysterious, and exceedingly sexual in nature. A blend of exotic Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla.

Very sharp in the bottle, softer on me; as it dries, I lose the disinfecty tinge. Quite similar to Van Van, Voodoo Lily, and Has No Hanna, which is not really that surprising, considering that I'm bad at picking out spice notes individually! HNH and VV are darker, VL has the floral note. (I can't quite sense a difference between VV and HNH, to be honest.) I think I like it more than those three, a bit, though I get the sense a lot of people love it a lot more than me.

Allergies have started. :((( I'm not into it.

Finished my blog post on the New Look! Gosh it's hard to get ahold of mid-century primary sources. Editions Jalou used to host a lot of relevant fashion mags, but something must have happened to that because it's been down for like a year.

The weather was nasty all day, so I never even got outside my apartment. How can it rain all day and still give me itchy eyes? A mystery.

Let us get behind us the OOTD, yesterday I was all "I don't know what I want with my life"

(That is a 1912 Hungarian edition of Dante's Inferno, beautiful red borders and all, and it reminded me that I have a fuckton of books I need to repair, like the two uglier tomes of Paradise and Purgatory that I want to re-bind in white with the same cover as of the Inferno.)

And today I just gave up on just about anything.

Today we went to OBI and chose all the floor tiles and shit we need for the flat in Budapest and it only took us maybe two hours of grating each other's nerves.

When I am all meh, I need repetitive tasks and the best among those is making corsets. I mean I can churn out 10 of those in the time it would take me to hand sew something.
While I have several meters of the striped fabric lower down, there is only one meter of this one:

and I spent half the afternoon searching for it. Since I want to make a corset AND a shrug, I have to be very careful about cutting it. Also can't decide which side to use but I thiiiink the black on grey is the right side.

So, instead of cutting this one up, I found a scrap of petrol Satan... erm, satin and cut out a corset. Also made some bias tape which will have to be sewn on by hand because my iron apparently hates satin.

I have sewn together yesterday's grey fabric, made 4 layers, so enough for 2 corsets, and cut out and made 4 complete black linings. (I hoard non-elastic black fabrics exactly for this purpose, middle layers and linings and stiffening)
Cut out and sewn the striped corset, still need to find a pattern to use for the shrugs:

I pulled out some suitable fabric for the stays from the stash. A white twill and my favourite for corsets/stays/structural undergarments: pillow ticking. I also found some fabric for the mock-up, but not sure that I'll have enough. And I cut out the paper pattern. Hoping to get some sort of mock-up done tomorrow.

Pelerine Fichu Thing I Think...

Apr. 12th, 2019 07:07 pm
koshka_the_cat: (Default)
[personal profile] koshka_the_cat
I took advantage of my last day with a projector (yay! spring break!) and enlarged a pelerine pattern from the Workwoman's Guide today. I cut it out when I got home and it was just too frumpy. Just the way it's really supposed to be, with the closed neckline. I played around with it a little and trimmed it and stuff, but turning back the front edge was best. So now I think it's more of a fichu, but with pelerine elements, and I'm not sure completely of its accuracy, but I want to like it, and there are similar enough-ish things out there I think.

So there. I'll make sure I like it like it before I decide how to go ahead, but liking it is more important than strict accuracy at the moment. I actually like a lot of pelerines in theory, and probably if I had time to do an elaborate one and my dress wasn't white, I'd like them somewhat more in practice, but really, pelerines are dumb.

And sheer cotton arrived today. I was going to do it in silk net, which I have, but that's for not I need it next week ack situation :)

(I don't anticipate much interest here, as you all know what size I am, plus what's not up to snuff on most of these! But it takes less time to stick 'em up here than sell officially on etsy, so it's worth a shot.)

As well as too much fabric, I have too many costumes. Way too many. I'm attached to most of them still, but...if I haven't worn them in two years? Five years? Only worn once? Where do I draw the line?

So I'm attempting to do a pretty ruthless cull here. And priced under what they're worth, even with the way I undervalue my skills...but right now I rate space over money! Although money is nice too, so no, not free. :P

This is the world's laziest attempt at a sales post, so I am not taking pictures or measuring, just linking to the blog pages, and you can feel free to peruse at your leisure. (Of course if anyone wants exact measurements, etc, I will do that.) Keep in mind that these are all made for somebody who is 5ft6in, weighs 120lbs, has chicken arms, and measures 32/26/36 normally. There's of course some variation depending on the era of corset/stays... Also several outfits have some leftover fabric that I will include in the sale if someone wants it and/or if I can find it!

Disclaimers: As-is; may need to be dry-cleaned, probably very wrinkly, some wear to hems, etc. Prices negotiable.

18th Century:
1790s accessories: mantle/sash/gloves if you want them although the dye has NOT worn well. Not the hat! - $50
Cotton print Brunswick: definitely has extra fabric laying around somewhere - $40
1790 green and bronze stripe jacket - $75

Regency:
Red linen teens spencer - $45
Cream striped wool teens dress - $75

Hit my 100-day streak on Duolingo for Turkish!

I need to get back to doing my lessons on Busuu, but I got to a point where it wanted me to be more conversational, and I didn't have the necessary vocabulary for it, so I've been concentrating on Duo for now. I definitely think I'm getting a better handle on basic sentence structure, so I'm really happy with my progress. :D
