I'm glad I didn't start sewing the skirt last night. Today I realized I can put a pocket in it. One is cut out now :)

Weird Food is Best Food

I've had this sort of running project going for a few years where I've been putting together a Star Trek cookbook. Whenever I find a recipe that sounds like a food mentioned on the show, I add it to the book, and I've been steadily amassing a collection of recipes that are not only wonderfully weird and alien, but also tasty.

I got onto a Deep Space Nine kick a week or two ago, and have been re-watching the entire series. It's been super fun, but it's also brought me back to my cookbook project, and I've been digging around the internet looking for recipes that sound like alien food. This has produced a weird side effect, in that I'm suddenly really craving snails and octopus and liver, and all the oddball ingredients in these recipes.

Of course, with our current living situation, I have no ability to actually cook these foods, so instead I just gaze longingly at a list of ingredients and let my mouth water.

But! Big Plan is that next April, since we'll finally be in our own place, I am going to host one whopping First Contact Day dinner party! I have a ton of trekkie friends in this area, so I know they'll nerd out with me, and it will give me an excuse to make Ferengi snail cakes and Klingon Heart of Targ and Vulcan Pok'tar.

April 5th, 2020. Weird food. Geeky costumes. Awesomeness. If anyone wants to join, there will be plenty of Hasperat for everyone!

A little...

I'm struggling a little. Not in the "I can't function" way more in the "I'm having trouble getting off my butt to do more than the most basic levels of function" I just had a string of days off and did I do any of the things I really should have done? like the pile of dishes, the mountain of laundry or the hefty list of sewing due before the YVD? um...I did two hoops worth of embroidery and cut out a set of stays...so not enough. at this rate I'll be at the YVD in absolutely nothing new.

oh and I've been eating so much junk food WHILE sitting on my butt that I'm frankly afraid to step on a scale.

*sigh* basically I want a hug I guess...and tomorrow I start my 3 day slog of 3- 12 hour shifts in a row.

I hate extra long days. I actually really want to do something but I'm completely absent of energy. I sort of wish my embroidery wasn't done ;)

I don't think I'm getting anything done today, and tomorrow is preview night at work so basically an 11 hour work day and then our early meeting day after that, so bleh. This weekend I'll get a good start on the bodice...

I think I have a bodice pattern. Just tweaks to the one I cut out a few weeks ago. As usual I just pinned it, didn't sew it. I obviously didn't try sleeves and admittedly a little nervous that a huge sleeve won't fit, but if it doesn't, I'll just do a style that's tight up top. Since I've used it before though, I know a sleeve will work in it!

I'd rather just embroider :)

I finished row 1 of the embroidery of my pelerine. And considering I only started it on the 4th I'm pleasantly surprised how well it's gone.

I started it once before with some cheaper voile and it was NOT working, so I ordered some of the farmhouse fabrics voile and it was a whole new world.

This tambour thing is fun! no wonder people like it.

Step 2 is a second row below the first. I didn't think I'd ever have time. HA. apparently this goes faster than I thought. I'm feeling the Katherine buzz and it is guuuuud.

So I sewed both sleeves, and gathered one and set it in, cut out the skirt panels, cut into the bottom of skirt panels and sewed them up again, cut into the top to form the apron-front, ironed the plackets that will go on the sides of the apron into shape, cut out the bib, and ironed down three edges on bib to mark where to hem. Not bad for a weekend!

A while back, someone recommended Elizabeth Willey's A Sorceror & A Gentleman as high fantasy with a focus on social matters (rather than a quest, or the magic system, or w/e). I'm halfway in and still interested, but not quite hooked. It's from the '90s and feels bit dated )

I'm interested in seeing where it goes, but I'm not really devouring it.

I started knitting my beaded purse Friday afternoon, and I knit for quite a bit, ending up with an eighth of it finished. Saturday I started working on it again, and I hit a join in the spool of thread. Ugh. So less than a quarter of the way finished, and I had to cut the thread and start transferring beads onto the other side of the join. No, the beads will not slide over the knot; some of them have to be encouraged along the thread. I really have no idea at this time how many beads I'm going to end up restringing, but it will be a lot. It went from taking 20 minutes to move beads along to get more thread to knit with to taking about 90 minutes. Sigh. But the bag is looking pretty and has a wonderful feel to it. At least I don't have to count the beads as I string them, and I know all of them will fit over the needle, though it may be quite tight so it goes faster than the original stringing.

I finished the embroidery.

The bodice pattern isn't finalized.

I have no idea what to do without a mindless project to just pick up!

I know, finish the bodice pattern...

Politics is doing my head in lately. I think some of that's because I'm spending more time on Twitter - I'm going to integrate myself into Fashion History Twitter if it kills me, and it will because it just reinforces that a) most of the other women who study this stuff are Drs and b) the professional fashion history scene in America is extremely twentieth-century-centric and that's why I'll never get hired in a costume collection - but also because it's accelerating as we head toward the primaries. We're going to have a FULL YEAR of a primary season that promises to be exactly as hellish as 2016, if not more so. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

Finally cut out the sleeves and skirt for my bib-front gown. I added no width to the sleeve because the upper arm was the right size, and the lower arm is quite a close fit, which is how I assume it's supposed to be. I also didn't realize it's got that slightly-too-long-scrunched-up-above-the-wrist thing going on, because it's so slight. Very interesting! So the top of the gown is based on the trained bib-front pattern in RWD, and for the skirt I used the other, because it's straight panels and I don't have enough fabric to cut out gores. (Edit: Realized after going to bed that I do have the fabric to cut out gores, silly me.) Hopefully it all comes together. I don't know why it shouldn't but I'm always concerned. [personal profile] ktlovely, when is the event again? I don't know why I can't manage to remember. I thought it was April but I think I got it confused with the MANY conference that was partly held there last April - it's the 1812 weekend in June, right?

Will need to make a bonnet. Can't find any of my Lynn McMasters patterns (although since the failed CW spoon bonnet that had a very wrong brim shape I'm a little wary of the brand now), but I think I would need to draft something new for this period anyway. Maybe a casque? (NB: I've made two entire bonnets in my life and this will be a mess.)

pretty pink fleuuuuuurs is done

I don't think the Imaginary Boyfriend appreciates his pretty pink embroidered suspenders-to-be as much as he ought, but they still don't look like much, haha. Just embroidered strips of fabric now, instead of plain! As I said, I'm going to be clever and make the trousers first.

Embroidery looks very...embroidered.
embroidery 1

I think I'm going to finish the neckwear completely before going back to the welt pockets of evil; the pieces of the stock collar are still hanging around, and today I cut and started hemming a strip of plum-and-cream 1/4" stripe silk to use as a cravat for day. It's stupid easy but I know I'll feel all accomplished when I finish it!

Long day!

I'm starting a beaded knitted purse/bag from a pattern published in 1924. I realized that the first thing I knit with beads took a couple of hundred beads, the second thing took a couple of thousand beads, and this is taking a couple of tens of thousands of beads. That's an order of magnitude increase for each project. The progression has to stop, though, because there is no way I'm stringing a couple of hundred thousand beads. I've been working on this project for two weeks, and I still haven't even cast on.

This is what 23,500 beads strung on silk cord looks like.

Three more motifs to finish, and I'm done!

The last one took less than an hour. So between about three and four and a half hours left. Kind of exciting :)

Nine motifs are completely done. The five left have just under an hour and a half's work each!

So I guess I have to finalize the bodice soon...

But I've written three treats for Chocolate Box, and I'm working on a pitch for Contingent, a new history mag aimed at a general audience that especially wants to publish people with a postgraduate degree in non-tenure-track/non-academic jobs. (Attacking the idea that flappers are equivalent to Millennials.) I really need to get back to my bib-front gown but as usual I'm afraid of cutting out more fabric and ruining it.

Watching DS9's "Far Beyond the Stars" this evening. I so appreciate it when shows do episodes that are AU fanfiction.

Would like to buy myself a new lipstick or two because I wear Tango Red almost every day, Carmine on occasion, and Victory Red once in a great while, but I get exhausted looking at the options and then trying to figure out how it will look on me ... I feel like I want a more medium pink for variety, but I don't know if a pink will suit me at all. Wish Besame did sample lipsticks!

I never know what exactly I think about the new Les Mis, so a few disjointed points.

I also never know what I think about Victoria. Victoria )
