LA for the Weekend
Sep. 8th, 2015 03:52 pmI'm back from LA!
The Queen Mary was pretty fun, though we didn't get to stay as long as I would have liked. My parents picked my grandpa up before picking up my BF and I at our hotel at around 2:30ish, and we crammed in the car and headed down there. I wore my Miss Pettigrew outfit, my bf wore a nice hat, and my grandpa wore his WWII navy vet baseball cap that he wears everywhere anyway. We saw some classic cars, looked through some of the vendor booths (I've never seen such a huge markup), and wandered around the ship a little, taking some pictures. (My bf had never been there before.) Apparently, they've changed their policy so that you can't just wander for free like
theladysarah and I managed to do a few years ago, but it turned out okay, since my parents decided we would have dinner on the ship. First, though, we stopped off for drinks at the Observation Bar, where there were lots of other people dressed up very nicely. Then we headed over to the seafood restaurant for our reservation, where my bf ordered the most delicious swordfish (my lobster was eh). We walked around a little bit more after dinner, going down to some of the lower decks, and we peeked into the 1st class dining room, where the Art Deco ball was getting started. Then my grandpa decided he was done, (he is turning 90, after all) so we headed out. It was cute, though - as we were walking around, multiple people came up to my grandpa and thanked him for his service, and asked him about the war.
When we dropped him off, he showed us all these old family pictures, which was cool - this one is my grandma in her WWII navy uniform.

Here's a couple pictures from the Queen Mary. It was really hot, so my curls completely died, and I wound up putting my hair up while we were walking around.

Sunday, we celebrated my Grandpa's 90th birthday with brunch at the yacht club with lots of family and friends, which went really well. I ate so much this weekend!
We did hit the fabric district yesterday, but unfortunately, Home Fabrics was closed for Labor Day, so no silk for me. However, we found a lovely cotton velvet for Flynn Rider (alas, no suede in the right color), and my boyfriend also picked up nearly 9yds of wool for $5/yd at Michael Levine on the remnant table. He fell in love with a three-piece suit he saw at the Queen Mary on Saturday, though I have warned him that I don't know how to do mens' suits, so he'll have to figure out who will make him one.
