Canada Weekend
Jun. 26th, 2018 12:54 pmI managed to get through my entire to-do list from Thursday before picking my mom up from the airport. Friday morning, we headed up north to Canada. We opted to take a slightly longer back road to the border from south of Bellingham, so that we can do some exploring. It was very pretty scenery, and we found delicious ice cream from a dairy in one of the towns on our route, so that was great. We got into Abbotsford and found that there really wasn't much to do there, other than a bead store (no antique stores!), so we headed back to the hotel and opted to order in Chinese food.
Saturday, we headed out towards Hell's Gate, about 1.5 hours from Abbotsford. We stopped at Bridal Falls for a short hike up to the waterfall, and it was a pretty spectacular waterfall, so that was nice. We stopped for baked goods at a bakery in Hope, then headed to the airtram at Hell's Gate. The airtram takes you from the side of a mountain in the Cascade range, down and across the Fraser River (at its deepest and narrowest point, with twice as much water flowing through than Niagara Falls), to the base on the Pacific Coast range side of the river. There is a bridge where you can go across the river, where it's super crazy windy, and the water is rushing and whirling so much underneath the bridge that a full tree trunk in the water had been stripped of its bark and was going back and forth caught in the whirling river. It was really cool. There were some exhibits down at the base of the airtram as well. Afterwards, we headed back to Abbotsford, had a delicious seafood dinner at a trendy place in old town, and went to see Oceans 8.
Sunday, we headed back to the US, stopping in the Ferndale area for some antique shopping. I bought a cotton petticoat for $10 which I believe is from the 1890s - embroidered striped fabric, two ruffles edges with lace at the bottom, a deep hem facing, and tiny tiny stroked gathers in the CB panels of the skirt. When she said it was only $10, I had to snap it up. We got back to the south Sound area in time for the season premiere event of the theatre that I do a lot of my shows with, and I'm super excited for their next season!
Yesterday, we explored Gig Harbor (just across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge from Tacoma), and went to (and won) trivia last night with some of my friends. I'm back at work today, and my mom went off to see Incredibles, but we'll have an early dinner together before I take her to the airport. Overall, a nice trip!

After I drop her off this evening, I'm going to a personal training session at the gym, and then if I have enough energy left, I hope to start on a mockup for the plaid 1890s blouse. With CoCo coming up so quickly, I want to completely finish the 1890s shirtwaist/skirt and Ariel's tail for Disenchanted by the end of this weekend. Then next week, I can hopefully do everything I need to to finish the red silk Regency dress, plus any last minute sewing for the show, before they go into tech the following week. That will leave me with the bodice of my gala gown, and figuring out how on earth I want to embellish it, if I don't stick to my original plan.
