I thought making a chemise directly from a pattern (simplicity 2890) would be a quick easy project that I didn't have to fit. Apparently, I was wrong. I finished the chemise tonight, and the neckline is nearly 6" too big around. Since there's no way I'm undoing any of that, I think it leaves me with two options (unless any of you can come up with a third!) -

Option 1: create two small eyelets in the front and insert a drawstring to cinch in the neckline, which I don't think was period, and would ruin the nice smooth look I tried so hard to create in this project.

Option 2: take in the chemise neckline in at least three places, which might create a little bulk. It wouldn't make the neckline so pristine like it is now, but at least it would probably look better than gathering.

Any thoughts/advice?

Sewing has been put on hold for the last several days, and will be on hold until after I reach CA around April 20th. That said, I will at least try to update once a week with posts regarding my journey across the country. I leave FL on Tuesday.

That said, I just spent a lovely weekend at Bay Area Ren Faire. I wore my navy velvet doublet gown on Saturday, but opted for a cooler (and ever so scandalous!) look for Sunday, since it was supposedly somewhere around 88 degrees or so. So scrambling last minute to find something cooler to wear, it's my short sleeve "chemise" blouse, plus my two 18th c petticoats, and my ren corset. Here are some pics!

I also have a quick pic of the chemise I was commissioned. I even managed to make a tag for it with the embroidery stitches on my machine.

The chemise is done. I based it more on a regency style than 18th c., because I wanted the short sleeves. I accidentally cut the neck a little too low in the back, but at least it won't show from under the chemise a la reine. I'll probably wind up making another one, with lace edges and longer sleeves, when it comes time for me to make a more structured 18th c. gown.
