This weekend went by soooo fast. On Saturday, my BF and I went to Steamport Gamble, which was a very tiny Steampunk event in that cool Victorian town I like so much. I will do a separate post on this event and what I wore.

Yesterday was mostly spent running errands, cleaning in preparation for my new roommate, working on audition music, and going to a callback. I did manage a little Rapunzel sewing, though. I took off the terrible fraying etsy piping from the bodice, made new piping, and started on the embroidery! I just did the first motif, but the skirt edges are all marked for the embroidery, so it should be quite easy to do the rest starting tonight. I realized I haven't embroidered in over a year. My poor fancy machine. I've really only done three large projects on it (Anna, Rapunzel #2, and the Court Gown), plus several smaller things like reticules and t-shirts. Hopefully, I will have enough thread and stabilizer for this whole project, though the stabilizer may require a Hanukah miracle...

Here's a bad picture of the first motif. This is one of the front corners.

I was feeling depressed over work last night, so I didn't sew. I did try out the spiral boning in the Rapunzel corset, though. I'm almost positive that I'm going to use the spirals in the side seams. I'm thinking I'm going to use them in the side back seams, too. I tried them in the second-to-back seams, but with only one flat bone left in the CB seam, I felt like it didn't really have enough structure anymore. I may also try them in the side front seam, though again, I'm worried about structure. And I'm kind of feeling like I really can't tell how much bend I want/need until I put it on with the skirt. So I think the bodice is going to be put aside for now. Hopefully I'll have enough energy to start on embroidery tonight.

In attempting to get enough space on my sewing desk to set up my embroidery, I picked up the lace that has been sitting there for the chemisette, and figured I may as well get started on that, too. So this morning, I gathered up one of the pieces of lace. I'll do the other one tonight, and hopefully sew them to the chemisette. That way that mini project is completely done and can get put away.

I picked up the boning yesterday after dinner, and decided to swing by Joanns to get something to use for the lacing. Since mine is a real corset, and not decorative like the other two I've made (or like what she actually wears in the park), I wound up with pink ribbon instead of rat-tail. I sewed in all my boning channels, and put the boning in, but haven't yet closed off the end of the channels. Once I do that, I'm going to move the piping down just slightly in the CF, because I think the CF of the bodice is coming up too high.

Honestly, I'm not loving the fit on the bodice right now, but it's too late at this point unless I want to redo everything. I think it could have used more hip flare (I probably also could have left the hip 1" longer, but oh well), and I don't like the way it makes my bust look, but I think there's no way of getting around that with the seaming on the corset. I'm hoping that once I add the sleeves, and the lace, and the skirt and everything that I'll like it better! the hip flare may also just be a matter of breaking in the corset - I decided to use all flat steel, and I'm hoping I'm not regretting that decision! Part of me almost wants to order a few spring steels and pick them up tonight, and play around and see if I like it any better. It probably would only cost me $10 and 30 mins... Maybe I will.

I also am not happy with the piping I got, but it was the only one I could find, even online. For the past two Rapunzels, I had purchased the pink satin piping at the Sew Expo or in the Fabric District, but since those weren't options this time, I ordered it from someone on Etsy. I probably should have just made my own. The piping is really tiny, and it frays like nobody's business. Before I even started on the boning channels last night, I had to fray-check and whip/patch down the binding in the corners where the straps meet the back - it had pretty much frayed all the way to the seam. I suppose it's not too late to rip it all out and make my own, since I haven't started whipping it down anywhere else yet, but then that's just one more thing to add to the list. Hmmm... Any opinions?

Oh, and I did get slightly distracted at Joanns. They have a whole bunch of ribbon on sale right now, including quite a bit of Disney ribbon. The wider Mickey and Minnie ribbons were $.50/yd, and the polka-dot was $.97/yd. They had mismarked the narrow Mickey and Minnie ribbons as $.05/yd. Naturally, I made them give me all of that ribbon, since it was so cheap (though the first lady I talked to tried to tell me that her coworker was having problems with the "0" key on the price tag maker, and would have to charge me $.50. Umm, no). I also gt a couple yds of 3" wide hot pink satin ribbon for $.50/yd (not pictured). I figure I'll make all sorts of bows and things to decorate myself with at Disney World. :)

Here's a pic (please let me know if Google is still blocking images, and I'll fix it!)

My Rapunzel skirt panels are all serged and sewn together! Considering what a pain this poly satin is being, I consider that an accomplishment. I cut off about 2" of the hem, because it was feeling way too long, and I also had to even up all my seams, because I find that bias seams on poly satin never wind up the same length. But at this point, the skirt should be ready for embroidery!

I also shortened the bodice by about 1.5-2", because it was going way too low over my hips. Now that I've finally decided on length, I was able to order my boning last night, so I'm going to be able to pick that up this evening. I also started putting the piping on the bodice - I got one side of the neckline and hem done, and once the bones are in, I'll be able to whip it all down on the bus.

My goal for tonight is to put all my boning channels and boning in, and if that all goes smoothly, I might start on the embroidery.

I also still need to think about that reticule for Saturday, so that might happen tonight, too. Probably another quick and plain one. I looked into adding horsehair to my hem for Saturday, but I only have three yards, and I'm pretty sure my hem is bigger than that. I guess it doesn't hurt to actually measure it and make sure.

I've also been brainstorming hair options for Rapunzel. As much as I would love to have the giant blonde braid, I am not blonde, and I don't much fancy the idea of wearing a wig all day at the parks. Also, I'm kind of thinking that they might be more likely to let me in to Epcot on Halloween night if I'm not wearing the wig. so I'm thinking I'm going to braid in a long red hairpiece (probably the one I used for my green and ivory bustle gown at CoCo), and just clip lots of flowers into that. Any other ideas?

I have done almost no sewing since my last post. In fact, I wound up with a massive headache yesterday after work, and fell asleep at about 9:30, which for me is insane. I figured I would probably just wake up early and sew this morning, but I actually managed to sleep for nine hours! I guess I needed it. I did have enough time this morning to serge two of the Rapunzel skirt panels, but that's it. (Have I mentioned before how much I hate poly satin on the bias?)

My cedar balls also arrived yesterday, so I took the boots out of the freezer, vacuumed all the moth poop out of them, and put a few cedar balls inside, as well as the slipper socks that were keeping the non-moth-eaten one upright (maybe moths don't like slipper socks?) They are now back on top of my bookshelf. My guess is that my moth traps will arrive today, so I'll put one of those up there too, and I'll be monitoring both the traps and the boots very closely over the next several days. Fingers crossed!

I felt pretty productive yesterday. After finishing the 1890s outfit (and posting about it on a weekend, no less!), I ran a few errands, had an audition, and worked on Rapunzel. I cut out and dyed the fabric for the forepart, cut out the satin for the rest of the skirt (I hate satin), and did 32 eyelets on the bodice. Luckily, one of those errands I ran was picking up my Viking from repair, so those are machine done, but it's still a lot of work with the awl, and turning the fabric around the post! I was watching American Ninja Warrior while sewing half the eyelets, and it made me feel like an American Sewing Warrior. (PS - this should be a thing)

Oh, and it fits! I took in a little bit in the upper half of the CB seam, but I think the rest will work just fine. I still haven't decided if I want to shorten the length of the bodice yet, though. I think I'm going to need to assemble the skirt before I do that. Assembling should be able to happen just fine tonight. I can't remember what kind of stabilizer I used last time for the skirt fronts, but if it was just tear-away, I might go ahead and start the embroidery tonight, too. I hope I can find all my files!

I got a fair amount done on Rapunzel this weekend. I mocked up the pattern, which was a nearly perfect fit. The only thing I had to change was the angle of the straps, so I only had to recut one of the pieces, and everything else from the mockup will be my interlining. I serged all the interlinings to the outer pieces, and sewed them all together. I'm pretty sure my Rapunzel pattern has more pieces than any other bodice I've made. There are 17 pieces, and two layers in each piece. But it always has turned out really nice before, so I hope this is no exception.

I've decided to go with flat steels for the boning. I just don't feel like spiral steels are going to have enough hold, and I've never worked with them before, so I guess it makes me nervous. I don't think it will wind up too terribly stiff. There will be a piece of boning on each seam, (stopping under the bust in the front), and the front lacing will have boning on either side that goes from bottom to top. I would like to figure out the measurements today, but at the same time, I'm wondering right now if I have it going too far over the hips. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to make that call until I start the skirt and see them both together. So the boning may have to wait. Luckily, there's a local lady who sells pre-cut boning, so I can order from her and just pick it up, which means no waiting for shipping!

Speaking of shipping, my Vogue fabrics order should be arriving today, which means I'm going to put Rapunzel aside for a day or two, and hopefully finish off the 1890s outfit. It shouldn't need much, and I find that giant gathered sleeves are always easier than fitted ones. I think I may do a fitted liner inside the pouf to keep the pouf in place, but it doesn't have to be pretty!

In other news, I went to the Ren Faire on Saturday. It was way better than when I went a couple years ago, probably due mostly to the perfect weather this time. We only stayed for a few hours, but my bf found pants that I think he can use for Flynn, and he got to try on the boots that he's ordering online. I didn't feel in the mood for hoops and velvet, so I wore my maiden outfit, which is basically my Ren corset, a peasant blouse, a couple of 18th c petticoats, and lots of flowers. It was comfy at least!

And a follow-up to my last post. It sounds like my boots somehow got moths. :( They're in the freezer right now, so hopefully all the moths will die. I checked all my other antiques, including the Victorian clothing and the vintage furs, and there's no sign of the moths in any of them. It definitely makes me nervous, though - how did they get in? I've had these boots for two years, and this could only have happened (at least I'm pretty sure) in the last several months.

I went to Joanns yesterday evening and picked up the cotton for the sleeves/neckline of the 1890s outfit. I was still having a hard time deciding between the two striped fabrics even once I got there, because one looked better on the sleeves and the other looked better on the neckline. And then it occurred to me - the neckline would look so much better if the stripes were running vertically instead of horizontally! Hopefully this outfit won't be too hard on the eyes. It's a lot of plaid, plus embroidered vertical striped sleeves, and embroidered horizontal striped neckline. I think it will work out okay...

I also picked up some terrycloth, because my hair towels have been smelling off, no matter how hot of water I wash them in. So if my Vogue fabrics order doesn't get here soon, I'll have some towels to make, not that that will take long.

When I got home, I made cookies for our work picnic today, and then started on drafting up Rapunzel. I think I got all the math figured out and notated on my existing pattern pieces. I'm going to attempt to size it up directly on the mockup fabric, but if that proves too complicated, I'll just draft it all into new patterns. I want to get cracking on it! I also need to decide what I'm going to use for boning - when I've done it for the commissions, I've used cable ties, but those girls don't have much that needs containing. However, if I do 1/2" flat steels, I won't be able to use bias tape for my boning channels, which means more work. I've made cable tie-boned stuff for me before, and I've found that while it works great for conical corsets, it doesn't work on Victorian, and I feel like this is kind of a mixture of the two. We'll see. I would need to pick up more cable ties anyway.

And shoot! It just dawned on me that I don't think I have any more satin piping. I really don't want to make any. I wonder if I can find it online?

Last night I finished the binding on the plaid portion of the 1890s bodice, which means that's about as done as I can get it before the organdy arrives, and I pick up whichever cotton from Joanns. Luckily, though, Joanns came out with a coupon this morning, which means after work today I'll swing by and pick some up. On the other hand, though, I have yet to get an email that my Vogue Fabrics order from two days ago has even shipped! *Sigh* All of my other recent fabric purchases have shipped, but none of it is expected till arrive until sometime next week.

But that's okay, because last night, I also started on Rapunzel. I dyed the bodice fabric, so that is ready to go, and I hope to start on the patterning this evening. Luckily I've made this bodice before, but of course, both times was for a much smaller person. Hopefully I'll be able to just enlarge the pattern I made for them without too much difficulty.

Can we please talk about the fact that there have been over 90 LJ posts on my friends feed since mid-Friday! I think LJ is back!

I'm also crazy excited for all these travel plans that are floating around. I'm glad you guys are spreading them out in two different years, because I'm definitely going to need to save up money, but they sound amazing!

I had a busy Sunday. I picked up my CoCo things from my roommate, dropped off the Viking at the repair store (hopefully they'll be able to fix the reverse button issues I've been having), and got a bit side-tracked by a going-out-of-business fabric store in the same parking lot. Don't worry, I was pretty good (though I'm sure it was helped by the fact that almost all their fabric was gone already). I only got several yards of a few different trims, a bunch of buttons for the black silk taffeta bustle gown for later this year, and some beading odds and ends (mostly clasps, because the faux-clasps I made for the 1830s gala gown bracelets were just silly).

Then I hustled off to meet my bf at Joanns, in the hopes of finding Flynn Rider doublet fabric for him (to no avail). Yes, that's right - new costume plan! My bf and I are going to Disney World over Halloween, and we needed appropriate Disney couples costumes to wear at the park. I let him choose (after vetoing the all-leather Hook from OuaT), and he chose Flynn! Hopefully the doublet won't be too crazy, though my bf can be a stickler for accuracy sometimes (I created a monster, what can I say). Unfortunately, it's looking like we'll have to go online for the fabric. We're trying to find something that breathes, since it is still FL, so I think we've decided on either canvas or corduroy. Rapunzel should be relatively easy - I'll have to find my embroidery files, but after all, I've already made this costume twice, so it shouldn't be too bad.

That said, because I've got these big Halloween plans coming up, I'm really hoping to finish the 1890s walking dress this week. Last night (after going ice skating with my bf and his family), I patterned out the bodice, and tried the mockup. It was so close that I'm pretty confident with the few tweaks I've made, I can cut out the fashion fabric tonight (famous last words? I hope not!). I still can't decide on the "blouse" fabric, though - while at Joanns, I picked up swatches of two shirting cottons, one with a woven sateen stripe and the other with embroidered stripes, and a quilting cotton with tiny reddish polka-dots. I have a feeling I'm going to have to make up the whole rest of the bodice, and bring it with me to Joanns to help decide which looks best when it's a giant voluminous sleeve instead of a 1" swatch...

I finished Rapunzel yesterday. It feels soooo good to be done! I'm mailing it off this afternoon.

And today, I started working on an 18th c suit for my BF for a SITU event coming up in a couple weeks.
theladyrebecca: (Default)
Progress continues on both Rapunzel and Miss Pettigrew. On the bus today, I finished attaching the lace around the neck, and finished half the lace around the hem for Rapunzel.

Then when I got home, I got to work on Miss Pettigrew. The bodice pieces are serged and assembled. I wound up taking 5" out of the center back -it was way too huge. I think I'm also going to have to take out about 1.5" at the tops of the side seams, too. I made 10 buttonholes and 10 fabric-covered buttons, and attached 9 of them (one is in the way of the neck). I also cut out/interfaced/serged a waistband for the skirt, but I need to go buy a zipper before I can attach it. And I cut out/interfaced the collar/tie, before I realized that I cut it at least 6" too short, so I have to recut that one tomorrow. I feel like I'm in a pretty good place - I just how I don't have any sleevils tomorrow!
theladyrebecca: (Default)
I sewed most of the lace around the neckline of the Rapunzel bodice on the bus today, and I'm sure I'll finish that (and hopefully start on the lace at the hem) tomorrow.

I also started on the Delysia LaFosse outfit. I drafted out a pattern, cut out the body and skirt pieces, and sewed together the skirt. I'm not sure I'm in love with the look. In the movie, the skirt is darted in the back and gathered in the front, which I feel like makes me look a little dumpy. I'm going to stitch up the bodice before I really decide how dumpy I look, though. I don't think the 30s are going to do me any favors... Oh, and my hat is not going to be an exact match. I have a wool hat that I dyed blue, but is not the same turquoisy blue as the fabric. Oh well. This whole outfit is going to have to take about 15 or less hours to sew, after all.

Oh, and in other news, I now have an entire dresser drawer where nothing in it is newer than 1910 (and probably more like 1905, but I need help dating one bodice). I know I still owe you all pictures of the two newest acquisitions. They'll happen eventually.
theladyrebecca: (Default)
I finished the sleeve puffs. I flatlined them with organdy so they'd be poufy but not scratchy. I hope it works! And I hope I don't have any sleevil putting them in. If only I could remember if I made any sort of cuff or solid finishing to the bottom of the puff last time...

Anyway, here's a pic:

In other news, Man of la Mancha closed yesterday, so I am currently between shows. I start rehearsals for Fiddler on the Roof tomorrow, though. :)
theladyrebecca: (Default)
I put my zipper in. Two days ahead of schedule. Ok, that's not true - I wanted this done a month ago...

theladyrebecca: (Default)
I've become a crazy lady.

I started my new job this week, which is downtown, and which means it's cheaper to take the bus than park. Now, typically, I start to feel nauseous if I try to read on the bus, and if I fool around with my phone, I'm wasting data. So instead, on the way to work, I've been sewing!

I haven't done much, since it's a relatively short bus ride, but so far, I've added in the back "blouse" panels on the Rapunzel bodice, and sewed a shoulder seam on the 1860s handsewn bodice. Other than that, I haven't done any sewing this week. The next step on Rapunzel is to put in the zipper, so I'm procrastinating. But I've decided to not let myself leave the house on Saturday if I haven't put it in. So I better get to it! Once that's done, it's just sleeves, and tacking the lace around the edges. I want to be done! Somehow I doubt I'll have enough time to make anything for [livejournal.com profile] vanessa_lynne's deco event.

In other news, this is the last weekend of Man of la Mancha - just four shows left. :( Then Tuesday, I start rehearsals for Fiddler on the Roof. No rest for the weary!
theladyrebecca: (Default)
I sewed today! I finished the piping around the neck and waist, and I also made the "blouse" pieces that go in the center front and the back neck. The center front one is already attached, so I took a picture as proof.

I start my stitching job at ACT in the morning. I'm a little nervous! I always have major doubts about my abilities, since I'm completely self-taught. I hope I can do everything they want me to!

Oh, and we had our Regency tea on Saturday. It wound up being a little smaller of a group than I had hoped, but there were 8 of us there (plus a baby) and the tea was yummy, if a little unusual. Hopefully pictures will be coming soon. I didn't take any, so I'll have to wait and steal them from others.
theladyrebecca: (Default)
My phone was being stupid and wouldn't let me post last night. But I wanted to share my picture proof that I've actually been doing a tiny bit of sewing. Two days ago, I sewed on all the piping on the bodice, and now I'm going through and tacking it all down as binding. I'm probably a little over 1/4 done with it now, but hope to get a bunch more done tonight, if I don't fall asleep. I find it so hard to wake up at 6am.

theladyrebecca: (Default)
The Rapunzel skirt is almost finished. I had a lot of battles with the satin today, which really slowed me down, and I've now decided that satin is officially my 3rd least favorite fabric (behind chiffon and that white linen from my pink candy early bustle). But anyway, at this point, all I have to do is hem the front panel, add the lace to the hem of the front panel, and put a hook and eye at the waist. Then it's on to the bodice. Here's a pic:

I have to admit, though, working on this is making me itch to get back to my handsewn 1860s bodice!
theladyrebecca: (Default)
I hardly got anything done on Rapunzel today, just facing and pressing the hem on the skirt. And running to joanns and picking up the ribbon trim I needed. (though naturally, i just realized I forgot the lace for the hem...)

But, during rehearsal tonight, I worked on my handsewn bodice! I sewed the facing bits down on the center fronts, and did one shoulder seam. For the next rehearsal, my goal is buttonholes.
